| This wasn't supposed to happen. I knew the LGI had its days numbered what
with all the new offerings from major manufacturers like the Streamlight
Luxeon 3AA Tasklight that made 625 lux as compared to the brightest LGI
Classics ever built, at 824 lux.
But the good ol' saying about Karma, and what goes around comes around, etc., has proven true. A loyal Bulk Alumnus had his sister crank the head down so tight that it separated the 1W batwing's dome from its base, and he asked me to fix it back up. Despite being saddled with the current Baby Pin build, an upcoming trip, intense hourly e-mails with a couple of fine mod partners trying to work out the details on an unrelated mod project, modern-day life in general (working full time, raising a child, paying bills, talking nice to the wife once in a while), and my obsessive minute-to-minute monitoring of CPF -- I still said sure, why not? He's a loyal buyer several times over, and I know what it's like to be without my LGI! So he sends it over, and midway between discussions about the details of the rebuild, we decide to replace the fractured batwing with a 1W Q3J HD and he would go look for his own Fraen Low Profile since my supplies were tight and I could not even finish off the Baby Pin run I had now without the shipment of Fraens and additional boards that I was waiting on. So when I was done I tested it, and the darn thing luxed 995 with used batteries! And one thought led to another and I got to thinking that this combination might really be something special with the HD and the Fraen, so I cannibalized my own Baby Pin and...put it in. Without further ado, let me explain better through pictures and text about exactly what we now have. Presenting - The Super LGI. Here it is preening and posing with its competition, from left to right: Streamlight 3AA Luxeon Tasklight Super LGI Streamlight TL-3 5W Pelican M6 w/R2H HD McModule SureFire L4 5W Baby Pin
Here is the Lambda Light Saber beamshot in the same order, two feet away
from the baseboard:
The only one doing well against the Super LGI is the PM6 w/R2H McModule; I must say that size for size, there really is no better reflector than the one which comes in the Pelican (although the Baby Pin's beam looks pretty darn good coming from such a little thing, doesn't it?). But let's back off, shall we? Say to about 20 feet below the cathedral ceiling of my living room? In order here are the beamshots from the Streamlight 3AA, Super LGI,
and Streamlight TL-3 5W:
Sheesh, no comparison at all. Then it's the Super LGI, SureFire L4, and Baby Pin (go, Baby, Go!):
And finally, against the awesome pinpoint throwing power of the PM6 w/R2H McModule:
And although the PM6's hotspot is obviously brighter, it is also obviously smaller. In fact, when shining both lights through the small valley behind my home it was clear that the larger hotpot of the Super LGI enabled me to see much more due to its significantly wider cone of useful light, without having to move it around to improve the view. But the best surprise of all was when I took the light output reading:
1,733 lux. No other LGI has ever made anything remotely close, even the few (six, to be exact) custom LGI-LE's I made once that had the few lucky owners so excited because it finally cracked the elusive (at that time) 900 lux barrier. And now we have an LGI that effortlessly pumps photons over to the far side of 1,000 lux. This is just super output -- from The Super LGI. Thanks for reading!
