Finally got all the parts from McGizmo and immediately stuck'em in my silver 2x123 McLux battery pack using a dat2zip BB750 (it's on the right, against some very stiff competition indeed):
(BTW, if you look closely at the McLux-PR's tail, you'll notice that the ubiquitous Kroll switch is missing -- see that hint of red in there?) The lights are, from left to right: 1) McGizmo's own 5W in SF TurboHead, known for its powerfully tight spotbeam and incredible throw 2) My own LG5, souped up for even more output with the addition of a Pelican reflector 3) My personal (ooh, personal!) PM6 w/W3V McModule. And here are the beam shots on the ceiling from twenty feet below, one
by one in the above order against the McLux-PR (always on the right in
the following shots). First against the 5W SF TurboHead:
The Turbo had a stronger hotspot and also made the PR's beam look bluish, but it was actually as white as snow as you will see. The PR also had a larger hotspot and greater sidespill light, which by design is virtually absent in all SF TurboHead beam patterns. Next up is my own LG5, a direct-drive V2T 5W running on a full 9V, and also using an identical Pelican reflector. Keep in mind that this same light produced a SpaceNeedle-like 7,000 lux with a Mag reflector:
You can see that the McLux-PR is brighter and whiter, with a more intense hotspot. Finally, here it is against its near-clone, my own Pelican M6 McModule
also running on a BB750 regulator, also using a Pelican reflector (duh!),
and it even boasts a very bright and extremely white W3V 5W HD
Luxeon from the original run of forty McModules:
Wow, no comparison. Why is my new McLux-PR so much whiter and brighter? Same powerplant, same fresh sets of DP-brand 2x123 batteries, same reflector, same...hmmm, could it be the high-flux Bin Code? It must be said that the spacing machined into the new McLux-PR's head is set up for the focal plane of a 1W HD. Don himself suggested I shim the reflector upwards by a few hundredths of an inch (and I have a shim on the way from him for expressly this purpose), but I could not resist posting about this new mod already. I will probably add another beamshot or two when the shim is installed, as the donut will disappear and the output will be...stronger still. YeeHaw! Thanks, Don!!! |
