A potential compact battery source for the upcoming
voltage-hungry Luxeon 5-Watt, especially if you plan to power it without
a circuit board. It will also make for a nice, compact power source for
a 2D MagLite running a 6D bulb, making for big light output from a small
light body:
It comes out of this:

Just got home from work (officially) and still no reply from seller.
I am really thinking he has a huge stock of the complete lights and is
either uninterested or unable to bring in a shipment of just the battery
holders (if indeed he can even get them that way).
I'll check through the day and keep everyone apprised if I hear something,
but if not, we may have to re-poll how many are still interested if they
have to buy the whole light -- at $8.50 plus shipping.
I am also hoping the seller will deal with each of us individually (since
he sells on e-bay anyway), meaning we would contact him and when the order
reaches 50 lights, we all pay(pal?) him collectively and he starts shipping.
Otherwise he would have to ship to me, then I would have to ship back
out to you, possibly doubling the shipping cost.
Then again, if someone had come out with just this battery holder alone
and offered it for $9.95 or $12.95 or even $14.95, I might still be tempted
to get a couple, so $8.50 for an entire, functional LED light is not such
a bad deal. Especially when you can take out the battery holder and do
neat and/or insane stuff with it.
BAD NEWS! BAD NEWS!
I went to Wal-Mart and bought a new MagLite 2D and...these battery holder
packs WILL NOT FIT!!!
I as duped by my own stupidity and smug presumptuousness that since D
batts fit the rubber LEd lights, and these batt. packs did also, that
vice versa would be true -- IT IS NOT!!! The Mag tube is a hair's breadth
SMALLER than these batt. packs! The packs WILL NOT FIT!!! Repeat: THEY
WILL NOT FIT!!!
Alternative: look for another D-cell light with looser I.D. tolerances,
mebbe the Garrity Ozark Trail? Or ream out the Mag tube slightly? The
packs are thin-wall plastic construction and cannot be reduced.
I may break them apart and use the top and bottom caps on the AA bateries
alone, holding them together with tape or something. That is all for now
- sorry...
Good news
After being greatly disappointed by the fact the 3AA into single D-size
adaptor was a hair too big for the 2D MagLite. I finally found an all-aluminum
Garrity Ozark Trail 2D at Wal-Mart (yes, even in Hawaii!) and the adapters
slide in smooth as silk:
